 Tips & Suggestions

GPS:

Have you considered purchasing a GPS?

Is a GPS worth the cost and the time involved to become proficient with the unit?

Hunters, canoeists, hikers, anglers, etc. will find this new technology invaluable when pursuing most outdoor activities. Coupled with map and compass knowledge, a GPS allows the user to locate their current position on a topographic map within 15 meters, (49 feet) simply by turning the unit on. Once you have waypoints entered into the unit, a GPS will give you a bearing and a distance too that waypoint from your current location, regardless of where you are.

Those individuals familiar and confident with map and compass skills can expect almost immediate benefits when using a GPS. If your map and compass skills are not up to par, a GPS will provide you with some benefits, but those benefits will be limited. If you fit into this category, I would suggest that you look into ways to improve your map and compass knowledge. You must be able to set a bearing on a compass and follow that bearing. Understanding the UTM coordinate system is probably as important as any map and compass skill, if you want to get the most out of your GPS. A GPS is a tool that works with your ability to use a map and compass, it will not replace the need for that ability.

In addition to the basic functions, (I.E. entering waypoints, etc.) a GPS will allow the user to establish routes, track trails or roads that aren’t on a map, or track deep-water channels for trolling, etc. Coupled with a mapping software program you can download waypoints, tracks, and routes, from the GPS to the program. You can also create waypoints, tracks and routes with the mapping software and upload this information into the GPS.

If you spend time in the outdoors, today’s technology is at the very least, worth looking into.
