Maine Fly Fishing Instruction
Over
the years I have taught many individuals the art of fly-fishing. It's one of
the most rewarding parts of my job. Many of my regular clients today, are
people that fly-fished with me for the first time.
Unlike
the fly-fishing schools , where individuals are taught as a group, and the
group is taught casting, knot tying, fly tying, stream-side strategies,
fish-food identification, gear selection, etc.
I instruct 1 or 2 people at a time. I spend an hour or two
teaching casting techniques and then we go fishing. Although all of the topics
discussed at these schools are important, I have found that until you are able
to cast and catch a fish, these topics only add confusion and make fly-fishing
seem more difficult to learn than it really is. Your guide will tie the
knots and find the right fly to use. You can learn these techniques from your
guide while you fish. There is no school that can make you an expert
fly-fisher in a few days. Time spent on the water and experience is what will
make you an expert. I have been fly-fishing for over 40 years and I learn
something new every day I spend on the water. In my opinion, that’s what
makes this great sport so much fun.
Anyone
can learn to fly-fish. Persons over age 12 can learn the art of fly-fishing
rather easily, individuals under age 12 usually have a more difficult time,
but with the right equipment, even they can learn to some degree. This makes
fly-fishing a great family sport. Many of my clients are fathers and sons,
husband and wives, and we now see entire families fishing together.
If
you have thought about becoming a fly-fisher, and have been discouraged by
articles that make this sport sound difficult to learn, fly-fishing is
no where near as difficult as some individuals would have you believe. It’s
a sport that is gaining in popularity every year, so what are you waiting for?
Our
rates for fly-fishing instruction are the same as our fishing rates.
Fly-fishing is taught at the same traditional sporting camps that we normally
book our clients into. I would recommend a trip of at least 3 days, or longer.
